Sentience is personal manifesto project, designed based on a set of principles that make me human. It is presented in the format of a video game, inspired by my love for the storytelling aspects of video game UI design.

CONCEPT

The story within Sentience is an allegory for my life as I learn to grow to be a functioning adult in society. The things I have learned have been influenced by my experiences in life and my time as a Graphic Design student. Therefore, this manifesto is a compilation of rules I live by, lessons I have learned and the goals I strive for.

STORY

The story follows a young ANDROID, the player, navigating a future where the ability to augment yourself physically or emotionally through technological advancements is possible.

Through exploring and interacting with other characters, the player slowly forms their own opinion on what it truly means to "be human."

Each item in Sentience loosely corresponds to a principle, whether it is life or design related. While each item has its own Data Entry, it is important to note that not all are in the player's possession, as seen on the Inventory screens.

OBJECTIVE

The main goal of this project was to create something that tells a story visually. I considered creating a functional UI, but scrapped that because I wanted to be able to lead viewers by simulating a user flow through motion.

INSPO

The biggest inspiration for this project was the UI design in Persona 5. I was particularly drawn to the unique individual UIs for each store that you could buy from in the game. A huge part of experiencing the story in Persona 5 is being immersed in it through the UI design, particularly with how smooth it is to transition from gameplay to menu.
